<image:title>Introduction</image:title>
<image:caption>I am a landscape painter working en plein air making large-scale acrylics and smaller studies. As I work on site, I allow Nature to take its course, to show the accumulation, traces and scars, the evidence of erosion, growth and decay. I build up and work into the surface, while fragments of the site become embedded in it. Wind, temperature and precipitation intervene as active forces. In this way weather, site memory and materials collaborate in the painting process. By making space for unplanned events and loosening my control over the outcome, I allow a sense of wonder to emerge. For centuries Western culture has sought to demystify and control nature, and today no corner of the earth is unaltered by technology. Yet Nature remains an unfathomable mystery, infinitely complex and enigmatic. My work inhabits a continuum from Alan Sonfist’s Time Landscape (initiated in 1975) to the present-day groundswell of artists addressing climate change and questioning Western anthropocentrism. We need to perceive ourselves as connected to everything, but not the centre of everything. Site: Don Valley, Toronto Ontario, 1986</image:caption>

<image:title>Introduction</image:title>
<image:caption>The Canadian Shield: This iconic landscape is the location of some of the Earth's oldest bedrock. Traces of glaciation and other geologic events are everywhere. Thousands of years of human presence is also interwoven with the topography. In the Terraforms series, casts taken directly from the site were combined with manufactured materials, natural fragments and acrylic paint. The paintings transmit a resonance from these ancient sites. Site: Muskoka Ontario, 1991</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Niagara Escarpment was once an ancient seabed. It is now a 725 kilometre-long forested ridge of limestone traversing Southern Ontario. It has been shaped by both geological and human forces. Despite having been designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the Escarpment is often at the centre of land-use battles. <image:title>Introduction</image:title>
<image:caption>My studio is in a wooded area on the Niagara Escarpment. This place has been at the core of my practice since the 1980s and it has a long history of disruption and renewal. It is within the bounds of the Ajetance Treaty 19 (1818) and the Mississaugas of the Credit. This was an old-growth forest in the 19th century when settlers arrived. The land was cleared, burned, mined for limestone and later, abandoned. In the centuries that followed the site was re-wilded by native species and also by new populations of border-crossing plants and animals. Today the forest continues to transform due to climate change.</image:caption>

<image:title>Requiem for the The Peel Plain</image:title>
<image:caption>The Peel Plain The Peel Plain series moves to the Greenbelt farmlands northwest of Toronto. It is a place of huge skies and distant horizons but also a landscape shaped by cultural upheaval. In the 19th century, colonists cleared the forests and applied a geometric order to the land. An unintentional result of this was the revealing of vast open spaces that can border on the sublime. The farms are now disappearing due to urban expansion. I paint these open spaces aware of their troubled past and uncertain future. Many of these images are painted on site, grounded in the moment. Others rely on photographic documentation to trigger memories of places that no longer exist. Peel Plain 3-July-16, N. from King St, at Sloan Rd 2016 acrylic on canvas 72”x108”</image:caption>

<image:title>Requiem for the The Peel Plain</image:title>
<image:caption>Requiem for the Peel Plain This geological area has some of the most fertile agricultural land in the GTA, and is the site of constant change. Over the last two centuries the original forest has been subsumed by agriculture. Now the agricultural land is itself being subsumed by development, and the proposed Highway 413 darkens the horizon. Big skies can still be found here, and pockets of old-lineage forest remain, but these are endangered spaces. The paintings reflect memory and loss within a changing landscape. work site, March 2016</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ancient Silence 1993 acrylic, plexiglass, cast fiberglass & collage on plywood 96”x192” During the working of Ancient Silence, multiple plywood panels were transported to a work-site in the Niagara Escarpment forest. The process of building up layers of acrylic paint, fiberglass casts, metal mesh, fragments of fabric, cement and material from the site is a metaphor for natural processes and a tactile equivalent of the site. Casts of hoof prints and other traces give glimpses into the lives of beings inhabiting the site. The work tries to re-establish a connection between our own and the natural world, while the clumsiness of the methods undermines our conceit.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Radiant Earth 1995 acrylic & collage on moulded fiberglass 109”x192” Radiant Earth began with a large fiberglass shell molded over the ground of the site. This surface then became an arena on which to re-enact natural processes. Layers of paint-saturated fabric fragments, tissue paper, wire, carpet, and fiberglass casts were built up and scraped down, paralleling the accumulation and reabsorption of organic material. Fabric “sprouts” pierced up through the surface, and fiberglass “burrows” penetrated below it, to imply a concealed subterranean world. The contours of the site directed the progress of the work, determining where pools of liquid paint would form, and where scraping away would be most pronounced.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Bones of the Earth 1998 acrylic & collage on moulded fiberglass 84”x 168” Bones of the Earth (1998) and Primordial Shell (1995) are both fiberglass surfaces molded over the granite of the Canadian Shield. Contours of rock fissures and glacial gougings are revealed. Splats and drips of texture-laden acrylic paint were built up and scraped away glacier-fashion by dragging a flat rock across the painted surface. Pools of salt and gravel-saturated paint were allowed to dry in the hollows of the fiberglass, just as minerals eroded from the rock are re-deposited. The paintings revel in the unfathomable mystery of these ancient formations</image:caption>

The canopy became more open and the forest interior became brighter, warmer and drier.</image:caption>

I used a low-tech panoramic camera and shot from a moving vehicle as I observed the changes in the landscape from rural to developing-suburban. Over time I amassed almost 2,000 images. The photographs are 3”x10” C-prints, shown individually or as groupings. The series shown here is in the collection of Peel Art Gallery, Brampton Ontario</image:caption>

<image:title>Process</image:title>

<image:title>Process</image:title>

These are sublime open spaces with an uncertain future. Through the paintings I reflect on memory and loss in a changing landscape. Site: Caledon Ontario, 2016</image:caption>
