The Peel Plain
The Peel Plain is an area of open farmland within the boundary of the GTA. I have conflicted feelings for this place, with it’s unintentional beauty, its colonial past and uncertain future. In the nineteenth century, First Nations people were displaced from their traditional lands to make way for colonists. The area’s forests were cleared and a geometric grid was applied to the land. Paradoxically, his clearing of the land created vast open spaces that border on the Sublime. Now they are also disappearing in the path of advancing development. The paintings in The Peel Plain series eulogize these open spaces while acknowledging their troubled history.
