The Peel Plain
The Peel Plain series moves to the Greenbelt farmlands northwest of Toronto. It is a place of huge skies and distant horizons but also a landscape shaped by cultural upheaval. In the 19th century, colonists cleared the forests and applied a geometric order to the land. An unintentional result of this was the revealing of vast open spaces that can border on the sublime. The farms are now disappearing due to urban expansion. I paint these open spaces aware of their troubled past and uncertain future. Many of these images are painted on site, grounded in the moment. Others rely on photographic documentation to trigger memories of places that no longer exist.
